The Butterfly McQueen

Posted by admin On November - 29 - 2009

In the 1990s, the Teachers Group ordered a luxury yacht from a Danish boatyard.   The Butterfly McQueen was built to the highest specifications.

It is now up for sale (since January 2003) at $3.295m.

The following two links provide detailed descriptions and pictures of the Butterfly McQueen:

Fraser Yachts Catalogue (For all the images, click ’slide show’.  Scroll down for the description.)

Butterfly McQueen (Extensive sales pitch with many photographs)

When it was built the Butterfly McQueen, at 39.7 metres, was reportedly among the world’s biggest glass fibre hulled yachts, with a computerised sailing system and luxury accommodation.

There is accommodation for 12 guests and seven crew.  Cabins are fitted out with cherry wood and Italian marble, with multi-system entertainment centres. The master stateroom has a king size four poster bed and en-suite bath. The salon boasts four Italian leather sofas and the dining room has an ebony-framed table.

The boat was moored for many years off Miami, near Amdi Petersen’s luxury Fisher Island apartment. According to the sales catalogue the BMQ has sailed 25,000 nautical miles since 1998, through the Panama Canal, to china and the South Pacific. She is now in Fiji.

The sales details comments:  “A three (3) year cruise through the South Pacific finds her in Fiji where the owners have put her on the market following completion of their dream cruise.”!! Who was on this ‘dream cruise’, we wonder. Tvind, of course,  is believed to have property, farms or commercial interests in Fiji.   (We have one listed company, Pacific Farming Ltd.  Two Fiji residents,  both Teachers – Peter Kjaer and Lilian Ekbom – are associated with Tvind as signatories of a Swiss trust, Gaia.  We would like more information).

In January 2003, Danish television TV2 reported that the BMQ was moored in the harbour at Aukland, New Zealand and up for sale. Mooring charges were reportedly $24,000 (£14,000) a month. The yacht is valued at $7.3 million (£4.5 million), but for sale at a bargain $3.3 million (£2 million).

Leslie writes: The official explanation for the existence of “Butterfly Mcqueen” is as follows.  At one time Tvind did a lot of sailing and they found that the repair costs were becoming expensive. They solved this in the Tvind manner by buying a ship-repairers. Then, since they had built the world’s biggest windmill, they decided to build the world’s biggest yacht. It has been sailing in the Caribbean on charter since then and is now up for sale. Naturally, Amdi has not been near it.

If I remember correctly, Butterfly McQueen was the first black actress to win an Oscar – for her role in “Gone With The Wind”. Her award had to be picked up by somebody else because of the racial discrimination which existed at the time. I think I have that just about right but it does not explain why it should be chosen by Tvind as the name for their yacht.

During my stay at Holsted most of the students would look at Tvind Alert from time to time. This sometimes resulted in long discussions with Anne Marie where they received the standard answers-e.g., the banana workers are being trained, the Florida property is so hard working Tvindies can have a holiday, the yacht has not been used to give Amdi a luxury lifestyle etc. These discussions took place in the school office which was adorned with a large framed picture of “Butterfly Mcqueen”. After yet another of such meetings Anne Marie was seen carrying the picture out of the office. It was never on public display again!

November 2004: Butterfly McQueen spotted in Australia

The Butterfly McQueen, the Teachers Group’s 40-metre superyacht, has been spotted moored at Gold Coast, Australia’s surfing playground in Queensland, as reported by the Gold Coast Bulletin (below).  With great surfing and terrific beaches, and the Great Barrier Reef not far away, it’s the ideal spot for a winter break for a reclusive millionaire.   The newspaper was unable to establish if the vessel has new owners yet; if it is still in Teachers Group possession, could it be Christmas in the sun for Amdi Petersen?

The luxury life…

Posted by admin On November - 29 - 2009

…the Teachers Group life in the sun.

It was rumoured for years that the innermost circle of the Tvind Teachers Group enjoyed a luxury lifestyle far removed from the Spartan existence of humbler Teachers and hard-working Humana volunteers.

In 2001 this was dramatically borne out when, acting on a tip-off, journalists located the Miami hideaway of Tvind founder Amdi Petersen – a multi-million dollar apartment with marble fittings and sea views in a secure luxury billionaire’s island.

It also emerged that the leader had exclusive use of a luxury yacht, the Butterfly McQueen.  Properties and ship had been secretly bought by the Teachers Group using the familiar network of offshore accounts and front companies.

The luxury properties in the USA may be only the tip of the iceberg.   There are also reports of a specially designed beachside villa with swimming pool in the Caymans, a huge ‘ranch’ in Zimbabwe, and plans for a palatial ‘retirement’ home in the jungle in Fiji.   At the time of his arrest, Petersen was flying between the USA and Mexico where he reportedly also had plans to build a villa.

During his trial, Petersen has been allowed bail and is currently staying in a fabulously appointed country retreat near Grinsted in Denmark, complete with swimming pool and indoor tennis court, the gift of a wealthy supporter.

Reports suggest use of these well-appointed properties and perks is restricted to the highest echelons of the Teachers Group – a couple of dozen loyal people, many of whom are now on trial in Denmark.     Less elevated members of the TG have to make do with an engraved watch.

Tvind property companies used to buy luxury real estate.

March 2009

by Nizar Manek, LSE student
writing for ‘The Beaver’ LSE student newspaper, March 2009

By Nizar Manek

Environmental officials at the London School of Economics have evicted a company claiming to be a charity from the School’s book reuse scheme, after The Beaver discovered serious financial irregularities in the company’s practices.

Two organisations affiliated with the controversial Humana People-to-People ‘charity’ network, the UK branch of which was closed in 1998 after Charity Commission findings of fraud, took part in LSE’s recycling of old books to Africa until officials were alerted to The Beaver’s findings.

Planet Aid-UK – the direct successor to the Humana-UK clothes recycling enterprise – has profited from the LSE Reuse Scheme. Incorporated as a limited company in October 1998 upon Humana-UK’s closure, Planet Aid-UK claims that to provide aid for Africa, though it is not subject to Charity Commission regulations.

Planet Aid-UK donates its Reuse collection material to a recently formed organisation internal to Humana People-to-People: Development Aid from People-to-People-UK (DAPP-UK), registered with the Charity Commission in March 2007.

Between late 2007 and early 2008, DAPP-UK received books from LSE through its ‘Books for Malawi’ scheme: the approach came via Planet Aid-UK, operating under the guise of DAPP-UK.

The Beaver suspects that the company Planet Aid-UK retains disproportionate ‘administrative costs’ for its intermediary work, donating incomplete proceeds to the charity DAPP-UK. Among purposes for such covert activity are tax evasion and reduction in declared profits.

On 20 January of this year, Poul Jørgensen, a senior leader and spokesperson for the worldwide Humana People-to-People organisation was convicted by the Danish Western Appeals Court (Vestre Landsret) for profits of Danish kroner 18 million in embezzled funds and a further 22 million in untaxed income.

According to the allegations aired in court, money was channelled to private businesses through a trust and left undeclared for tax purposes.

Journalists and researchers have identified more than 250 such interdependent companies and charities, many of whose accounts are located in offshore tax havens. Danish police, who have been investigating since 2000, put Humana People-to-People’s worldwide assets at £420 million.

In Britain, DAPP-UK’s General Manager Csaba Szeremley told The Beaver: ‘When we came to LSE to collect the books, our Vauxhall Vivaro van was overloaded. Over a period of four months, we collected 2.5 tonnes: 2, 500 books. To be honest, I felt we just cleared departments of outdated books consigned to the dustbin of history: the political sciences of the seventies’.

‘Since the last occasion proved so fruitful, we have plans to run this project again in the near future’, he added.

Szeremley, who became DAPP-UK’s General Manager earlier this year, having unsuccessfully applied to LSE in 2007 to read for an MSc in Development Studies, said it was volunteers at the Planet Aid Academy who had the task of sending the proposals to educational institutes and libraries.

A Charity Commission spokesperson said that though neither Planet Aid-UK nor Humana People-to-People fall into their jurisdiction, the Commission would be interested if the organisations were claiming to be registered charities and operating in England and Wales.

Companies House confirmed the status of Planet Aid-UK as ‘an active company, listing its activities as ‘other business activities’’. Any company claiming to be a charity but not so registered can face investigation by Trading Standards.

Shortly after LSE cooperation, a BBC investigation into Planet Aid-UK’s accounts for the tax year 2006/2007 revealed £400,000 of their exceeding £1 million turnover went to what Planet Aid-UK Director Birgit Soe described as ‘staffing and administration costs’. A mere £120, 000 – 10 percent – went to what Soe described as ‘good causes’.

By contrast, Textile Recycling for Aid and International Development (TRAID) – also a beneficiary of the LSE Reuse Scheme – successfully diverts 97 percent of all donations from landfill to serve its development aid projects.

Planet Aid-UK Director Birgit Soe told The Beaver: ‘Since DAPP-UK did not at that time have any storage space themselves, Planet Aid-UK helped them store the books collected from LSE. However, the books Planet Aid-UK donated, DAPP-UK could not send to Malawi because DAPP-Malawi asked specifically for educational books: they were instead sold in DAPP-UK’s charity shops’.

Szeremley was contradictory: ‘The books donated from LSE and other educational establishments – the Institute of Education, the Universities of St. Andrews and Nottingham – were all sent to of Malawi’.

‘But unfortunately the books got stuck in Durban, and DAPP-Malawi received a bill for using the warehouse there’, he added. South Africa

The Beaver requested details on the proportion of ‘administrative costs’ retained by Planet Aid-UK from DAPP-UK after collection and storage of the books from LSE.

Planet Aid-UK Director Birgit Soe said: ‘Planet Aid-UK did not get anything in return for donating the books from LSE to DAPP-UK. Planet Aid-UK is a not-for-profit company: all our profit is used for development work. There are no shareholders – that’s very important’.

Other instances confirm this to be the classic Humana People-to-People modus operandi: the merging of charitable and commercial activity, the extent to which the lines between are made obscure.

In September 2006, Asda evicted Planet Aid-UK clothes donation bins from its car parks, following its dispatch of a cease-and-desist letter to the company. The BBC revealed further instances of Planet Aid-UK placing charity collection bins on private land without obtaining permission and with no licence to do so.

Planet Aid-UK has since overcome this difficulty by deploying bins bearing the name of the registered charity DAPP-UK.

Szeremley told The Beaver, ‘We have a contract with Planet Aid-UK since 2008, given negative press coverage and the allegations against Planet Aid-UK’s aid work. The contract establishes Planet Aid-UK pay royalties to use the DAPP-UK charity name on their containers, and then transfer the money to DAPP-UK’.

‘It’s all for the greater good: DAPP-UK is perceived as more transparent. It’s a charity, subject to stricter regulations’, he added.

Mike Durham, a journalist who has studied Humana People-to-People since 1999, said, ‘This kind of activity is absolutely typical of the way Humana operate all over the world: shunting assets between different companies and charities so that at the end of the day as much money as possible goes into private hands, and hardly anything is left for charity’.

‘There is powerful evidence that well-meaning people are being exploited, and unwittingly helping fund an extravagant lifestyle in faraway places for a few clever individuals. Their activities are bringing recycling and the development aid world into disrepute’.

Author of the Danish language book on Humana People-to-People, Jes Fabricius Møller, said: ‘The problem is that since the beginning more than 30 years ago, they have failed to comply with simple rules of transparency and auditing. They consistently mix up their commercial with their beneficiary activities in a way that makes it impossible for outsiders and even high ranking insiders to find out how and to what extent they actually help poor Africans’.

Only on 20 February last month, the German Bundestag Federal Department for Economical Development declared Humana People-to-People Deutschland not to be a legitimate non-governmental organisation. 193 NGOs applied to be considered for the German Welttwärts programme for young people volunteering in the developing world: of the 192 recognised, Humana People-to-People – of which Planet Aid-UK and DAPP-UK profess membership – was the sole NGO to meet with non-recognition.

LSE Environmental & Sustainability Manager Victoria Hands, who pioneered the LSE Reuse Scheme and London-wide Reuse project said: ‘As LSE provides leadership in the sector for sustainable development and moving towards zero waste in particular, it welcomes the diligent research and helpful presentation of findings on Planet Aid-UK and DAPP-UK’.

‘LSE received a free collection service for old departmental books that would otherwise have gone to landfill. Although Planet Aid-UK met LSE requests to feedback on tonnages, it did not meet LSE requests for information on recipients and confirmation of reuse of materials. LSE has therefore decided not to work with Planet Aid-UK again’.

DAPP-UK General Manager Szeremley expressed dismay: ‘If I find that the organisation is corrupt, then I will surely leave. I am definitely disconnected from those people at the top, and I do benefit from information coming from the outside. But, you know, the Royal Bank of Scotland executive who refused to return his millions pension fund – he’s just as bad.’

The common public opinion is that following the fraud trial against Teachers Group leaders of the Tvind movement, Danish municipalities nowadays hardly ever use the Tvind ’special schools’ and ’social work’ institutions.

The truth is quite the opposite.

An investigation by www.tvindalert.com in 2009 shows that an astonishing 75 per cent – or 3 out of 4 – of Danish municipal social departments send kids to Tvind’s 27 so-called social institutions and schools around Denmark. All of these ’schools’ are led by Teachers Group members, with few – if any – professional staff. Instead they use young, inexperienced people from all over the world to take care of the kids, young people who have paid to be educated as so-called Development Instructors.

According to the information www.tvindalert.com has received from the municipalities, that generated an income to Tvind in 2007 of a least 74.3 million Dkr., and even more in 2008: at least 87.4 million Dkr.

Click here for detailed list of municipalities

Some of the 98 Danish municipalities have been rather unwilling to tell us exactly how much money they pay to Tvind. And some of them have obviously only given us the figures for the Tvind ’social institutions’, not for the schools. Based on their information we have had to make an estimate – and we have in those cases made a conservative, low estimate. So actually Tvind’s income from the municipalities in 2007 was probably close to 100 million Dkr, and even more in 2008.

All the institutions and schools are located in buildings owned by the Tvind-foundation “Faelleseje” – that means they have to pay rent to “Faelleseje”. According to the yearly financial statements “Faelleseje” has used its surplus to give millions in donations and loans to other Teachers Group-controlled organisations, schools and business in the USA, UK and African countries. In other words: Danish taxpayers are financing Tvind’s expansion in the USA, UK and a lot of African countries.

The 2008 financial statement for “Faelleseje” has not yet been published. But in 2007 “Faelleseje” gave loans and donations of 22 million Dkr. In 2006 the figure for loans and donations was 18 million Dkr.

Tvind ’spokesman’ Poul Joergensen was CEO and vice-president of the board of “Faelleseje” until January 2009, when he was convicted of tax fraud and embezzlement by a Danish court and and sentenced to two and a half years in prison.

TG-boss breaks the law once more

Posted by admin On November - 29 - 2009

The Teachers Group-boss Poul Jørgensen, recently found guilty of fraud, illegally continued to work for “The Private Independent Instituton Faelleseje” in Denmark (total equity: 227 million Danish Kroner) in spite of the verdict from Vestre Landsret (High Court) on January 20.

Jørgensen was found guilty of tax fraud and embezzlement in January and was sentenced not only to 2½ years in prison, but he was also denied the right to have any kind of leadership in any kind of companies for an unlimited time.

Before the verdict Poul Joergensen was both CEO and Vice President of the Board of Directors of “Faelleseje”. According to the Danish Company register he resigned on January 20, the same day as the verdict in Vestre Landsret.

Nevertheless the financial statements for 2008 for “Faelleseje” have the signature of Poul Joergensen as CEO and as Vice President in the Board of Directors. The 21-pages long financial statements for 2008 were signed on April 1 by all the board-members. And also by Poul Joergensen – more than two months after the High Court forced him to resign.

That’s an unlawfull act – according to what Danish lawyers tells tvindalert.com.

The financial statements were delivered to the Danish authorities on April 3.

WITNESS

Richmond Vale Academy, 2009

My name is Daniel Breton, I was a volunteer in Richmond Vale Academy in St. Vincent & the Grenadines, and was suppose to go to Africa, but at last moment quit the program.

Watching the work your doing against the TG, we´d like to inform you that we´ve initiated a Facebook Group called Richmond Vale Academy Alert, and if possible, we´d like you to publish this information for more people get to know what is this people really doing.

Below you will find just some of the comments I´ve placed in this group, if interested in publishing them in your website.  We decided to make this group because Stina Herberg, the person at front of the project, shows no scrupules and publishes untrue information of what the program is, bringing people to the program with lies. Here they are:

- Is not true as the brochure in internet say, that there are teachers there to attend you, and assist you in your training to be a Development Instructor.  There is no one to help you, you have to do everything by yourself.  Even more, this people don´t even know what are the needs in each of the projects were the Volunteers are send, they are send there and let them by themselves find out what to do.

- From the 19 people who started on March Team 2009 in RVA, only 7 are in Africa now, of course, disappointed of what they found there. About those who went to Africa who knows how many of them will stay until the end in their projects.  From what we know, all from September 2008 team, leaved their projects because of the lack of siriousness of this people.

– This people that say that are there to help, are truly just enclosed in their offices, doing promotion, bringing more people to this project, making them work mainly in cleaning and keeping the building beatiful with the excuse of training the volunteer, when the truth is that 20 feet away from the complex (a mansion that really is) are iliterate people living in galvanized chanties, without even beds, safe drinking water, latrines, and none basic things. And what is being done for that people? NOTHING!

- Furthermore, I can say about the fundraising that the economy in St. Vincent and The Grenadines is really poor, and the fact that the volunteers have to go out and sell things on the street, means that they compete with the same people that work in the street and which depend their daily sustent from it. RVA is not just not helping, is stealing their daily earns and way of living. Really really, shamefull.

- About the head of the School, she only cares about promotion, money, and her horses. She do nothing for the community.

- I, myself left the project at the last moments, and gave my 1,500 USD fundraising before quiting the project. And from my heart I ask Stina Herberg to give that money to the September Team 2009, now that funding this money is really, really hard in St. Vincents economy, and I´ve find out that the woman decided to keep this money. How disapointing…

- About the videos placed in YouTube, what a fake. All show actions made by the volunteers, initiative of the volunteers, the same people that is against this woman, but of course, she just appears there, where the actions are being done, with her camera, make some shots, and then, of course, with drums and trumpets, shows the actions as if it where being done big things for the community under the name of Richmond Vale Academy. What a FAKE! This woman should be ashamed of herself.

- This woman led one of her neighbors to court, for picking 30 Passion Fruits from a RVA Field, when the truth is that this person is illiterate, has no family, no bed where to sleep and no safe water to drink.  And many may confirm, that plenty of the fruit falls on the floor and gets spoiled. How HUMANITARIAN and HELPFUL. Isn´t it?  Even more, this people have placed this big building and plantation, in the land of this people, with the excuse to help them, when the truth is that their actions are not better than any previous imperialist, those they suppose to be against.

- This people really don´t appreciate what Volunteers are, using them mainly to fit their needs, and not really to help the communities and the volunteers themselves.  Fundraise it´s easy, when there is a real project, and people is receiving things from it.   But in the case of RVA is getting harder and harder-  Why?  Because people in the community are starting to get tired of volunteers asking for money, and seeing no benefit of it.  The way RVA is leading fundraising, is degradant and irrespectful to volunteers.

May God be the one to judge, may god be with this words, for Stina Herberg´s god  is money.

All be blessed

La Storia di Valentina (CICD 2009)

di Valentina Poli

L’IDEA DEL PARTIRE. BUONI PROPOSITI.

Mi viene risposto, con poca e scorretta trasparenza, che “si, you are very welcome if you want to organize activities here”.

Nonostante i molti “a breve” ricevuti.

Siamo tenuti a distribuire 1000 volantini door to door.

CONCLUSIONI.

Dove finiscono questi soldi? Chi li gestisce e come?

Fermiamoli!

CICD college and Gaia, Birmingham, UK, and Holsted, Denmark

March 2009

By KT from Estonia

Ok..where do I begin..
maybe from the very beginning…

First of all, the promotors there, who search people to participate in this Humana program, they DO NOT tell the people all the things You really need to know. SO when You go there with blue eyes, believing everything, you will fall hard and fast!
My promotor did not even tell me in detail how much money you have to earn and how long the program will take place, he told me twelve months. I took an academic vacation from university to go there. Later found out that it will take 18 months. So I took a year off from university for nothing, to raise money for them, knowing, that I can not go to Africa! This is the first thing. More to come:)

Secondly, let us talk about the program in detail. More details from the GAIA program. So You will work from seven in the morning until five-six in the evening, it depends. They do not even care if you have breakfast or take some water, fruits or something else with you, so you can endure all the long the walking. And the weather? THEY DO NOT CARE. If its raining hard, You will go fundraising. You have to leaflet all day long. You should get like 1000 leaflets out in this time, you walk more than 10 kilometres per day. And when You get less than 1000, like 700-800(thats the number what the people usually get out), you will get shouted at. The woman, Ann-Marie something, was really cruel and mean to us, she really did not care about us, the people, she cared about the money. And the most HUMANA Leaders care about the money. They said all the time : Get more leaflets OUT! You need to earn more money! Dont be so lazy! Organize yourself! thats what they usually said. They did not help us, so we could learn more about something, we learned all by ourselfes. Like SURVIVAL! In one sentence: Money is more important than us, the poeple, who are there to help and wanting to go to Africa. One Example: One person who worked too slowly, was sent home because they realized that she costs more for the program than she is bringing in with this hard fundraising!

Thridly, cash cash cash. So more about the earning system in this crazy HUMANA program. IN GAIA you have to earn 2400 POUNDS in 4 months, with leafletting. It makes 600 POUNDS a month. Sundays we had off, and we drove every month to Hull, where CICD is. Mondays were Study Days, so we could not work. So we worked every month like 16 days. And we must leaflet for getting clothes. Every bag we collected was 1 Pound for us. SO 2400 bags full of clothes we had to collect, which is a lot. 40 bags every day! But everyone collected like 15 in average per day. So in average everyone collects like 1400 POUNDS In this 4 months. BUT YOU MISS 1000 POUNDS!!! Well You go then to a school, in Denmark. DRH Holsted. There You have to fundraise by selling magazines or roses 4000 POUNDS in SIX WEEKS!!! Every month one week fundraising. Its even harder to get and you really have to work like a horse. You will sent out from the school to a city, whatever you choose. And then a survival week will begin. Where to get food? where can I sleep? In a public toilet! yes, indeed. We slept in a public toilet for two nights. So human rights? No trace!!
So this was really enough for me, so I asked my dad for money and flew HOME.

Fourth Chapter How much are they earning from 20 people?
So, I will write down here, how much estonian kroons they are making in average in 4 months when someone participates in the GAIA program?
We get for each 20 kroons(10 Danish kroons). But how much will they get?
Normally there are like 10 things in each bag. In Humana shops in Estonia they will get for one shirt, pants, shorts, shoes like 80 kroons(40 Danish kroons). So one bag is worth 750 kroons (375 Danish kroons). So every one collects in average 1500 bags full of clothes, like I told before. So 1500 bags are worth 1 125 000 kroons (550 000 Danish kroons) And this amount 20 times, so we get 22 500 000 kroons (11 250 000 Danish kroons). This is the amount only for 20 people, but they have hundred of volunteers. And this is the numbers for clothes what come to Estonia. And their expenses are really minimal, because in the storage, there also working a lot of volunteers, who put the clothes ready for transportation. So they pay only for transportation and holding their shops open. So this is only for Estonia, but i think in Germany, clothes are even more expensive. And in Lithuania, Latvia, Poland? They are sending them everywhere. A little percentage goes to africa. And they do not give there clothes out for free. The Africans must also buy them. This clothes, was volunteers are collecting to help poor people in Africa. This is desperating. Makes me sad and full of anger.
PS! This is only a calculation. Written proof I do not have. But if people think about it, You will see, it is really true.

One thing. Something about Africa. Other people stories
No normal conditions. No needed medicine. No material for building and helping. You are there on your own with some people, you barely know. You have to organize all by yourself. Go to the town chief, ask for help. You will get minimal amount of money to survive there. And what you learn in those DRH schools or whatever, this is not needed there. They just want you to learn something, because they can not sent you there, that you do not know nothing about this country, where are you going. You will learn by yourself and you do not get any help from the teachers. They are acting really strange, when you ask specific questions about the money, where it is going and so on. They just say: Helping others. Go learn. Dont bother me! And they get angry really fast. So it is really really hard there to endure. And you really do not get a lot of sleep. Im not going in this detaily, because it will become a real big story.

When You do not collect the money? You can stay there for 3 months more, in the school, and collect the money. Or you will be sent home, they will buy you a plain ticket and all the money, you have been collecting, goes into the pockets of the tvind cult leaders. When to think about it, they making a lot of profit, a lot! In the Birmingham house, CICD, people are living with minimal needs fulfilled, you have to do anything yourself. You have to work, learn, plan, work, collect, work!!! sleep? NO WAY!

ONE POSITIVE THING!!!
The people that you meet, who are also volunteers, are really GREAT. I saw, that all the people there were really friendly, they had no big fights, everyone got along with each other. We held together. And this makes me also sad, to know, that there kind of people, who are trying to make the world a better place, are trying to help, are used by this profit-making company. This makes me mad also.
Is this normal if someones dad dies, and you have to work the next day? NO IT ISNT!
Is it normal, if your kinda slow, but you wanting to help others, you will be sent home, because You dont make enough profit for the company? NO!

At leat I have to say, Humana uses kind people to make money. It is easy money for them, but hard work for us, the volunteers, who are believing in good! It lefts you with a empty heart and full of emotions, which make you sad.

Ok, this is all for now!
If You want to know more, just ask. I wanting to help you. And keep fighting against this company. I will help you with anything!

Regards,

KT, Estonia

Kwa Zulu Natal Experimental College, 2008

24th August 2009

My name is ‘Ghislaine’*. We live in Poland. zdz.roza@gmail.com I am a retired French teacher – too early retired, unfortunately.

I wanted to help children of the street in Africa, as a volunteer. I [chose] Kwa Zulu Natal Experimental College in Pinetown near Durban, South Africa.

I suspected nothing because in Poland there was and still is no information about Tvind and Humana People to People. So, I paid my [air] ticket, 25000 Rands of school fees and about 1800 Rands of
medical Insurance and I Left Poland.

For a period of six months, I had to be trained like a Development Instructor at the College in March Team 2008. After 63 [days], I had to escape. But it is a long story – one I [only] just began to relate, day after day, for my two daughters, as a diary, one year after my escape, because I wanted the emotions [to] decrease.

I have kept all the documents concerning my enrollment to Kwa-Zu, I observed [a] thousand strange things and met many people on my way. If you are interested, I could send my documentation and answer each question.

I want only add that I was the only student from Europe in my March Team 2008 and the Teachers Group chief was Bongani Khoza, from South Africa.

When I read your note of 7th Jan 2009 about [the] Police raid [on the] Teachers Group School in South Africa, I am thinking that Bongani could lose his position on account of my escape, I am not sure, but I was the best fundraiser the school have ever had and somebody well informed from the Cameroonians told me that Humana had big plans with my person.

In any case, I have never seen Lotte Pedersen from Denmark, or Lovemore Mawowa. I would remember them.

With my warm regards

WITNESS

CCTG college, California, 2008

THE HELP-AFRICA FRAUD

by Matrice Jackson, USA

My experience with CCTG was extensively problematic. Things in life are rarely reflective of what’s expected. However, I could have never anticipated the circus that is CCTG.

An initial sign of what would eventually become an incredibly disappointing experience, occurred my first day in the San Fran Bay area.

The agreement established between the director (Jana) and I was that I would begin my journey at the clothes collection house in the city of El Sobrante, CA. From there, I would commute with other students north to the school in Etna, CA.  I receive a text-message from Jana stating bus directions to the clothes collection house.  However, the way text was written made it completely undecipherable. She wrote a very long text using a bizarre form of “sort hand” and directions (I later learned) that could only be known by someone who was from or frequented California. She was well aware that I had never visited the state much less did I fall under the categories aforementioned. Mind you, I received this text the evening before my departure. I emailed and called her several times seeking clarification, to no avail. I called her again the morning of the flight and after landing but still received no response. While in the airport, I attempted several times to receive some form of correspondence. (For my life, I couldn’t understand how a school director would not be thoroughly concern about the safe arrival of all students). After more than an hour, she called me as if surprised to hear from me. As if she received none of my messages. She said “hello, Matrice….what’s up?” With total confusion, I stammered out my problem. Jana, as if burdened by my call, shot the number of a Jan Sako (clothes collection supervisor) who I would be calling to pick me up from the airport. While Sako and I were riding to the clothes collection house, he told me that when he talked to the director, she said that I made an “independent decision” to go to El Sobrante. He said she had preferred that I went directly to the school. Strangely, she never stated any preference to me. I recalled the conversation where she specifically stated my two options: “you could go directly to the school in Etna or drive up with some students on Monday from El Sobrante”. Since I had a week before I officially began “class”, I didn’t think it would be a bad idea to rest for a few days before taking the more than five- hour trip north. She said this was perfectly OK. Why she told Sako something so contrary to truth, remains a mystery to me. Although, the bitter taste of that perturbing event held my palette for my entire stay with the CCTG program, subsequent events… fried my tongue.

When I think of the participants at CCTG, adjectives such as kind-hearted and naive come to mind. But when I think of the leadership of CCTG, adjectives like heartless and venomous come to mind. For this organization has presented no sign of humanitarianism nor displayed any interest in the sustainable development of any underprivileged country. This organization is at best, a bad joke. At worst, a completely fraudulent and deceptive corporation.

The original version of my story was roughly five pages. I have condensed it to succinctly describe the ten most critical issues I had with CCTG:

  • There was only one class in the nine months I was there. This was a counseling class that lasted three days and was administered by the clothes collection accountant (?).
  • We spent 70% of our time fundraising and site-finding. 15% cooking and cleaning. 10% partying, 3% sleeping and 2% studying and preparing for Africa.
  • I grieved to leadership about the problem of not having time to study. My complaint was met with arrogant disregard.
  • I asked the leadership if the “morning courses” and “evening programs” could be used for study centered on the countries we were visiting and learning the local languages as opposed to playing children’s games. I was told “CCTG might not be the program for you. You might want to consider leaving.” Coincidentally, there was a clause in the contract that stated if a participant quits prematurely he/she will have to pay a $500 cancellation fee and $500 for each calendar month they were enrolled. If I was to quit, they reserve the right to file suit against me at any point (how charming).
  • I interviewed students and created a written survey to assess the general sentiment of my peers. There was unanimous dissatisfaction with CCTG specifically regarding academics. I explained to the students in a quasi-clandestine common meeting, that to potentially enhance our learning experience at CCTG, leadership must be aware of our complaints. I asked them to complete a survey form with the option of remaining anonymous. I was startled to find that many declined the survey out of fear the director might reveal their identity via their handwriting (a concern of most Asian students). Jana was greatly feared. Behind a curtain of anonymity, those who completed the survey expressed their discontentment quite candidly.  When I shared my data with the director, her face flushed red and she fire at me a gaze more wicked than I’d ever received before or since. Her verbal response: “I’ll look into it. That will be all!”
  • After enduring more months of zero learning and watching grown men and women behave like toddlers (filling the time between fundraising events), I decided to refrain from attending any “course” if it was not pertinent to understanding Africa, Africans, or something educational.  I explained to leadership that students were succumbing to childish behavior as a result of being disenchanted by the incomprehensive nature of Humana People to People “projects”. The few educational materials available were written in poor English and there was no one qualified to teach the material covered therein.
  • I had the pleasure of meeting an African TG (he wouldn’t want his name revealed for he informed me in strict confidence). He came to our “school” as a team-leader. His assignment was to help students with their site-finding objectives.  He and I spent long hours driving in California cities looking for places to host the clothes boxes. Our conversations were very intense. His description of Humana’s contribution to Africa’s decay was shocking. Before that point I knew that the organization’s agenda was opaque but I had soon begun to see its intent as malicious.  He would describe how African TGs were paid significantly less than TGs from any other continent. He spoke extensively about the contempt the locals have for the “Development Instructor” (DI) that come to their country. He said the student’s naivety and immaturity worsens matters for the local people. He said the locals know Humana has ill intent but they feel powerless in stopping this large organization. I personally observed the way the director mistreated the African TG: non-African TGs used common money for certain activities that he was made to use his private money for (yet his salary was far less).
  • I decided to create and administer my own project. I named it Great Minds of Africa. The objective was to support youth development by arming them with knowledge. The courses I was designing related to the following areas:

1) Shedding light on the “lost” and distorted facts of Africa’s pre-colonial past. Illuminating its great history.
2) Making them aware of the basic function of economics. Having them understand how money works and how to have it work for them.
3) Teaching Yoga and personal fitness as a way of life.
4) Reintroducing principals that would help the young men reestablish the great respect and reverence they once held for their women in antiquity. Etc.

  • My project was overtly accepted by the leadership but covertly undermined: I was told by the director that I could study and build my project, but I was chastised and repeatedly reprimanded for not attend the all-day parties and playful activities.
  • Ultimately, I was given an unrealistic and anti-contractual deadline for my fundraising. This deadline was not extended to any of my teammates or any other student. All other students had deadlines determined at the start of their enrollment. Mine was arbitrarily determined after I followed-up with the director about the student surveys (coincidence? Hardly). For not reaching this absurd goal, my involvement in the program was terminated. This action was a direct violation of my contract which stipulates that a student would only be terminated “for the use of drugs and/or alcohol”. I used neither. Since I didn’t go to Africa, I wonder what they did with the thousands of dollars I raised. I’m sure I will know when I take them to court (lol!)
