Harare, Oct 08, 2002 (The Herald/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- A LOCAL non-governmental organisation (NGO), Humana People to People, has given 10 tonnes of maize to orphans, the elderly and families hard hit by the drought in Bindura.
The NGO handed over the maize to the Minister of Youth Development, Gender and Employment Creation, Cde Elliot Manyika, at Manhenga Business Centre on Saturday.
Speaking at the hand over ceremony, Cde Manyika, who is the MP for the area, thanked the organisation saying its effort would lessen hunger in the province.
"This is not the first time for the people in the area to receive help from Humana People to People. It is good work," Cde Manyika said.
He added: "You have demonstrated your true friendship to the people and whenever the people are in problems you always come in with a solution."
Cde Manyika urged other NGOs to emulate such good work and help in whatever form they could.
Humana People to People has been donating food to various parts of the country including the Midlands province.
It is also engaged in health programmes under which it carries door-to-door campaigns to create awareness on HIV/Aids in Mashonaland Central province.
The organisation runs Ponesaivanhu Junior School which rehabilitates street kids and equips them with skills for survival.
The body has 11 projects it is running in the country, under which it provides humanitarian aid.
A spokesman for the organisation said it would continue to help underprivileged people.
"We shall continue to give whatever form of help we can to the people as it is our objective to help the needy," said the spokesman.
Most parts of the country are receiving food aid from NGOs to supplement supplies from Government.
