HUMANA’S NEW MONEY-SPINNER: SELLING AFRICA’S ART

Exclusive to Humana Alert

May 2006: The Tvind Teachers Group, which runs Humana, is rapidly expanding a new money-making enterprise: selling art by African sculptors at high prices to collectors in Europe, the United States and even Russia.

‘ Friends Forever’, based in eastern Zimbabwe near Humana’s African headquarters, may at first sight seem like a humanitarian cause, but on close inspection looks highly commercial. Specially-commissioned art by Zimbabwean sculptors is being put up for sale by Tvind at prices up to 10,000 euros each.

Exhibitions of the art have already been staged in the USA, Spain, Austria and the Netherlands, with shows currently under way in Italy and the Museum of Modern Art in Moscow. The sculptures are also for sale on the organisation’s website.

The new organisation makes much of its association with Humana, but in fact there is no mention of any humanitarian purpose, nor is it clear how much of the profits will be passed on to the African artists.

The evidence, instead, points to ‘Friends Forever’ being yet another Tvind money-spinning business. It’s curator, Sune Jørgensen, is a long-standing member of the Tvind Teachers Group, and president for many years of Tvind’s Arts Association of March 85. Sculpture sales have been put on by Humana Italy and Humana Spain, and in the USA, a recent Friends Forever exhibition was mounted in co-operation with Garson and Shaw, the Tvind-run used-clothes trading enterprise.

Eight members of the Tvind Teachers Group are currently on trial in Denmark accused of £10 million tax fraud and embezzlement in connection with allegedly non-existent charities in Britain, France, Malaysia and other countries.

FRIENDS FOREVER: THE TG CONNECTION

Who really runs ‘Friends Forever’? The organisation’s website, www.foreverfriendszimbabwe.com was registered last year by someone using the email friis@e-advice.dk. E-Advice is another Tvind company, which collects and sells old computers.

It gets better. We know the ‘friis’ is almost certainly Jesper Friis, a Tvind teacher who is the registered contact for several other Tvind websites including UFF in Norway and Humana in Spain. He is associated with Juelsminde, Tvind’s former school in Denmark, and also uses the email friis@humana.org.

‘Friends Forever is not just connected to Tvind – it is Tvind!

TVIND BUYS A LUXURY CAR FOR AMDI

Tvind has bought a 150,000 Euro (1 million Danish kroner ) luxury BMW X5 four-wheel-drive car for Amdi Petersen, the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten reports. The silver, 284-horsepower luxury car will be used to pick Petersen up from outside the jail in Denmark, if he is released on bail pending his fraud trial. Petersen and seven other members of the Teachers Group are facing trial in February.

There have been fears that if released on bail, Petersen will flee the country before the start of the trial. When he was arrested, Petersen was en route to Mexico, which does not have an extradition treaty with Denmark. However Paul Gade, the prosecutor, has commented that the purchase of the car is not a significant risk.

However Gade says the car purchase will make an interesting case for the tax-authorities. ‘The fact that they spend so much money on a car, is interesting because Amdi Petersen and several other Tvind-people for years have declared in their tax-return to have a annual income of about 10,000 euro (70.000 Danish kroner)’, says Gade.

Winestead Hall School complaints

RETURN OF AT-RISK TEENAGERS TO TVIND’S UK SCHOOL PROMPTS COMPLAINTS TO AUTHORITIES

Teenagers with behavioural difficulties are again being sent for ‘residential care’ to Tvind’s Winestead Hall school in Britain, four years after the school was closed down by British authorities. Town halls are paying Tvind a reported £3,000 a month for each vulnerable teenager, although according to information received by Tvind Alert, they are being cared for by completely unqualified ‘volunteers’.

Two volunteers at CICD have contacted Tvind Alert separately with concerns about this. There is very serious alarm that the vulnerable teenagers – at present one from Sheffield, another from Denmark – may be in the ‘care’of completely unqualified volunteers, recruited by Tvind. The ‘carers’ are also unlikely to be positively vetted to work with children – as UK law now demands. If so, this is a very serious offence.

The volunteers are asking how the £3,000-per-teenager is being spent, since there is little evidence of any money going to the welfare of the teenagers or facilities at Winestead. Three years ago investigators found money was being passed to a Channel Island offshore company as inflated ‘rent’. East Yorkshire Youth Offending Team have been asked to look into the placements and the national Probation Service is to circulate information about Tvind Alert to probation officers.

ELAINE’S STORY ABOUT WINESTEAD

Meanwhile, four more volunteers have left Winestead and asked for their money back. One, Elaine, has contacted East Riding Trading Standards (the local body charged with consumer protection), health and safety officers and is also considering going to the police. She has demanded return of £1,140 in fees but has so far been refused a refund.

She writes: “I joined the CICD in Winestead, near Hull, on 4th November thinking it was a legitimate organisation/charity and have since uncovered many distressing and dangerous practices. I have told them I want to leave and they are withholding £1,140 of my money and the same for 3 other colleagues. They refused to talk to us about refunds ……If I had not been convinced before I am most definitely convinced now that money is being siphoned off for some secret project – probably politically motivated.”

DUTCH CITY OF EINDHOVEN WANTS TO BAN HUMANA CLOTHING BINS

The city of Eindhoven, the fifth biggest city in Holland (more than 200.000 citizens), wants to ban the clothing bins from Humana. According to the responsible alder woman, J. Kuppens, the Court of Mayor and Alderman seriously doubts the integrity of Humana, following reports in Eindhovens Dagblad and other media, she said this week during a meeting of the advising council for environment. In October the council of the Dutch village of Oss decided to end the relationship with Humana for the same reasons. From January 1st next year the city of Zaanstad also ends the relationship with the controversial clothes collector.

NEW IICD-DOWAGIAC BUILDING OPENS – DESIGNED BY JAN UTZON

Claims that Tvind is really an impoverished organisation that gives its last cent to the world’s poor are again challenged, this time by a brand new school building opened last month at IICD-Dowagiac, in Michigan, USA. The building is designed by Danish architect Jan Utzon, designer of the Sydney Opera House. Utzon, evidently sympathetic to Tvind, also designed Humana’s palatial headquarters building at Shamva, Zimbabwe.

Volunteers ‘fundraising’ on street corners, supposedly to finance their college courses, might find this interesting news. Unfortunately Tvind Alert does not know how much the Utzon-designed building cost, or which Tvind company paid the bill.

NORWAY: If anyone of you reading this has been working in Norway for UFF or knows someone who worked there please contact me. I have some questions to ask. My e-mail reads hugmebaby@web.de

ITALY: Maurizio has offered to be a country contact in Italy.

He writes: “I’m as anybody else who wanted to leave for a while the reality to join a program with Humana abroad. I found a newspaper in a pub I’m used to go to. I found it very interesting, the dream of someone’s life. To help someone in Africa, attending a previous course in Norway, meeting a lot of new people. I opened the Italian web site and I started to search through DRH programs and all that stuff and I was amazed. I just loved it…..I went home after booking a private meeting with them. When I went home my uncle fortunately found out your web site and my dream suddenly disappeared. That’s all so far. I’m know in touch with a Social Centre that is trying hopefully to pubblicize the thing to kids.” maone@libero.it

‘Jeffrey’ writes: ‘Thank you for providing an open space for thoughts and truth. I am trying to find out more. It is difficult and kind of overwelming how much material there is out there.’

IDEALIST.ORG HOSTS A DEBATE ON TVIND

‘Idealist.org’ a website that lists many thousands of volunteering organisations, has been hosting a fascinating discussion on Humana on its message board. Many ex-volunteers have criticised Tvind programmes, and Humana has replied accusing the Danish government and media of lies and propaganda. Action Without Borders, which runs the website, is “a global network of individuals and organizations working to build a world where all people can live free and dignified lives.”

DUTCH PARLIAMENTARY PARTY DEMANDS EUROPEAN INVESTIGATION

THE HAGUE: The biggest party in the Dutch parliament, the CDA (the party of the Prime Minister), is now calling for European cooperation in an investigation into Tvind/Humana. The party again has asked questions to the ministers of Justice and Home Affairs, Oct 1st 2002.
The questions are as follows:
1. Are you aware that Humana still recruits people in Holland to work as a volunteer in Africa? CDA points to posters attached in Amsterdam recently and last year in Groningen and to advertisements in the free newspaper Metro.
2. Are you willing to inform with your collegues in Denmark, Belgium and the UK whether the Tvind-cult is involved in unlawful and/or punishable affairs? Are you able to inform the parliament about the outcome from this?
3. Are you willing to contribute to an international investigation on Humana?

AMDI HAD A DOUBLE IDENTITY – Danish police

According to the Danish police, Tvind-leader Amdi Petersen had two identities when arrested in a Los Angeles airport this year February. One of his credit cards mentioned him as Amdi Pedersen (in fact is it Petersen, but this explains why in official documents he is called Pedersen), another credit card mentioned the name of Mr Cordoba.
This is one the reasons the Danish police doesn’t want Amdi Petersen to be released from jail untill his court case starts in February. They are afraid he might flee.

SOCIALIST PARTY IN OSS, HOLLAND, WANTS TO END RELATIONSHIP WITH HUMANA

HOLLAND: The Socialistic Party (SP) in Oss, part of the town board, says it no longer wants to continue the relationship with Humana as a clothes collector in the village. SP will ask 19 questions and one of them is whether the mayor and the aldermen are willing to ask a local clothes collector if it is capable to take over the collecting from Humana.
The council of Oss is talking about the clothes collecting in Oss, coming Friday, Oct. 11th. The mayor and the aldermen rather want to wait for an investigation the Central Bureau Fundraising has announced in July. That happened after publications in the newspaper Eindhovens Dagblad and two items on Dutch television.

The power of loyalty – A Finnish woman’s story

HELSINKI / DENMARK: A Finnish woman contacted Tvind Alert after leaving a Tvind college in Denmark – she wanted to say something to alert her friends and team mates still at the school. She felt they were being exploited. Unfortunately, her team mates, many from eastern Europe, did not agree – they just wanted to get to Africa. They didn’t want her to rock the boat. She has temporarily withdrawn her story to protect her friends – it is a powerful account and a version will be posted on Tvind Alert soon. She can be contacted on: m_fin@hotmail.com

German mother wants legal action against Tvind

A German reader contacted Tvind Alert, telling that she wants legal action to be taken against Tvind in her country. She contacted the German ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs in Bonn after some very unpleasant experiences from her son at the Tvind-school in Ulfborg. She wants the ministry to give advice not to sent teenagers to Tvind-schools anymore.
She’s thinking about writing a report to the German authorities about what happened to her son when he stayed in Denmark. She writes for instance: ‘My son got misused as a teachers help, and he learned .nothing in his week about school subjects for which he came to Tvind. On the other side the youth department, that paid a lot of money every month for the boys stay, had to pay for lessons that never took place at all. Also the rooms of the kids are more than disgusting, there are dirty stinking bath rooms, the most of the toilets are broken’.

Denmark, Sept 25th: Danish photographers and TV cameramen got the first pictures of Tvind-leader Amdi Petersen in 22 years when he was taken to jail in Viborg.for the opening of the court case against him on Thursday. Amdi was wearing sunglasses and a ski jacket. Pictures at Danish TV2 web site: http://nyhederne.tv2.dk/tema.php3?id=1975 and at Jyllands-Posten: http://www.jp.dk/indland/artikel:aid=1432622:fid=5682/

In a surprise move, senior Tvind financial controller Steen Byrner, who was believed to be hiding in Ecuador, also appeared at the court session in Viborg. Amdi was remanded in prison until October 11th.

HUMANA SEEKS TO RECRUIT VULNERABLE CHILDREN IN ENGLAND

Four years after it was prevented from running schools for emotionally disturbed teenagers in England because of serious welfare and financial concerns by various authorities, Humana is again contacting local councils and probation offices in the UK inviting them to send vulnerable teenagers to Winestead Hall.

Tvind seems to be targeting young people leaving care offering ‘life skills’ courses. They are exploiting a loophole in the law, which does not require care homes for over-16s to be registered. Staff from Winestead have contacted the Scottish Throughcare & Aftercare Forum and a number of probation officers. Professional youth workers are concerned at the prospect of untrained ‘volunteers’ getting involved with vulnerable teenagers and action is being taken to stop it happening.

In 1998 Winestead Hall and The Small School at Red House, Tvind’s two UK schools, were closed after investigations by the Charity Commission and social services officers – there were concerns for the welfare of teenagers and allegations of financial impropriety. Winestead Hall reopened as Tvind’s UK training college CICD. Staff at CICD generally protest that there is no link between Winestead and Tvind, although to informed observers the connections are very clear.

PLANET AID USA CRITICISED BY BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU

The Council of Better Business Bureaus, an organisation that sets standards for charities in the USA, says Planet Aid in the US does not meet its guidelines of good practice because too many board members draw money from the organisation. Two of Planet Aid’s five board directors are financially compensated. President Mikael Norling draws $40,384 and manager Jostein Pedersen draws $60,920.

Accounts show that Planet Aid has a staff of 70 and offices in seven US states. It collected $4,996,456 in used clothes and donations in 2001 and claims to have donated $4,114,086 to projects in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador. (It would be interesting to know if this is matched by the experience of volunteers in these countries).

POLICE RAID AT AMDI PETERSEN’S APARTMENTS
The police has got permission to search after proofs in the Tvind-case in
Florida in USA, where, among at other places, Mogens Amdi Petersen lived.

In spite of protests from the defendants, the court in Ringkøbing permitted
the police to perform raids together with American officers.

The staff in the fashionable Fisher Islands Club shall hand over all
information about Amdi Petersen from 1991 until today.

According to the prosecution, the appartments were bought with money from
Tvinds humanitarian fund. Officially, the fund has allocated 440.000
dollars to an environmental project in Malaysia, but in reality, the money
was used to pay for the appartments.

BOSTON STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL CONSIDERS INVESTIGATION OF PLANET AID

The state attorney general’s office has said that it is reviewing the case of a Massachusetts-based charity run by a group that is accused in Denmark of setting up charities as “front organizations” for commercial businesses.

The charity, Planet Aid, says its two area stores, which sell used clothing to benefit the homeless, don’t take a profit and continue to raise substantial sums for the poor. Planet Aid, with stores in Harvard Square and on Newbury Street in Boston, is run by members of the Teachers Group, an informal network of activists that Danish prosecutors say set up a rain forest conservation project that turned out to be a commercial sawmill and funneled millions of dollars for their leaders’ personal use.

LETTER FROM PLANET AID US

Tvind Alert has received a letter, posted here below, written by Planet Aid in the United States. It was written as a reaction to an article in the magazine Smart Talk, which referred to Planet Aid as an organisation linked to the Teachers Group and it’s founder Amdi Petersen, who now faces charges in Denmark for fraud and embezzlement.

In the letter Planet Aid denies any connection to Amdi Petersen whatsoever – which is in contradiction with the Inditement of the Danish police and the common knowledge about the hiarchy within the Teachers Group.

NEWS ON THE TRIAL OF AMDI PETERSEN

As far as is known the court case against Amdi Petersen in Denmark starts on February 19th next year . Though it might be starting sooner. This week, Thursday September 26th, there will be another hearing in the case against the Tvind-leader. Amdi was in court last week and TV2 Denmark was able to shoot it’s first live pictures from Amdi Petersen after 23 years. TV2-reporter Rasmus Tantholdt tried to talk with Amdi Petersen, asking him how it was to be back in Denmark after 23 years, but the Tvind-founder didn’t answer the question and took off.
(Source: TV2 Denmark)

Amdi Petersen has got a new defending counsel, John Korsø Jensen, who has never lost a case.

BRITAIN

‘Penny’ from Brighton in the UK wrote to Tvind Alert inquiring about the Stoerkobenhavns International School at Nebbegaard, where her son recently became a volunteer. The school denied being a Tvind school. The son has now returned home. She writes: “The school he was sent to was Stoerkobenhavns Internationale at Nebbegaard. After we alerted him, he made discreet enquiries amongst the other volunteers. He was told that it was no longer a Tvind school, but that was a bit odd, as on his first day there, he travelled to Juttland to the main Tvind school for Olympic-style competition. The head teacher’s name is Boerge. A lot of the teacher still convenant to Tvind. My son quite enjoyed his time there; he was not able to form a definite opinion as by the end of the first week, we had told him that things were a little suspect, and he agreed to come home on the following Saturday. He made observations on the disorganisation of the staff, and the workload of the volunteers, who were nearly all Scots. He never actually met the head teacher; his contact was a teacher called Inga, who had worked at the Red House for several years. There seemed to be an odd relationship between the students and teachers, each party being free to swear at the other, and he noticed that some students seemed to be carrying weapons. Whilst we feel sad that it was a lost opportunity, the uncertainty of what might have changed once he had signed up with them meant that we couldn’t leave him there to find out. He also met Ole Tarp Petersen again, who had been the initial point of contact via the advert in the paper. He also conducted the interview in England, and offered the volunteers a job.”

LITHUANIA

A man who lives in Vilnius, Lithuania, informed Tvind Alert about Humana-shops in the Lithuanian capital and the lack of press reports in the country about Tvind:
‘There were no reports in the press in Lithuania about Humana. I’m just wondering why?
Humana collects clothes in other countries like England, Germany, Holland and etc. They just sell them in Lithuania.
I was in one of their biggest shops in the center of Vilnius (Gediminas prospect) and all I can say the clothes , shoes, curtains and carpets are very dirty and of very low quality (I had a big headache after my visit). Very poor people were walking around. Other Humana-shops look very bad as well. But as I can see they are buying small places for shops, not the big ones and they open them in all places around so it’s becoming like a network. They are the biggest second hand clothes company in Lithuania. Everyone agrees about that here.’

GERMANY

‘Uwe’, a young German man who wanted to go to the Tvind-school in Tvind, Denmark, backed off after reading some critical reports from newspapers and magazines. He recently wrote Tvind Alert:
‘In 1996 I intented to join DNS in Tvind. I was fortunate enough to get a hint about an article in the Spiegel magazine. After that I started investigating about Tvind, first on the internet, then in German pedagogical magazines. I found your articles (from Michael Durham) on a CD-ROM at the British Council in Berlin. As I had passed the introductionary weekend in Tvind I asked for someone to answer a few questions. One of their teachers came and was talking about ‘evil politicians and evil journalists’, everytime I asked something. I nearly felt pity for her. I think they can’t deal with criticism at all.’

NEW CHARGES AGAINST EIGHTH TEACHERS GROUP MEMBER IN DENMARK

Sept 5th: Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten reported that the number of accused persons in the Danish court case has increased to eight: it includes also Kirsten Fuglsbjerg. Amdi Petersen is still in jail in California, but has agreed to be returned for trial in Denmark. Fuglsbjerg is a member of the TG and belonged to the management of several Tvind-associations around the world. The same news was reported the following day in Berlingske Tidende:

TVIND FARM WORKERS IN ECUADOR SACKED AND HOMELESS

Ecuador, Sept 2nd. The 230 workers at Tvind’s Rio Culebra banana plantation in Ecuador, south America, were met by armed guards when they turned up for work. The workers had earlier been on strike for months in protest at non-payment of wages and health insurance by Tvind. The manager, Bjarne Hjorth, a member of Tvind’s Teachers Group, told them they were sacked. Since many of the workers live on the plantation, many are now homeless and jobless. Tvind has at least two other banana farms in Ecuador. (Source: Danish media contacts.)

NEW BOOK REVEALS 18 YEARS AT THE HEART OF TVIND

Denmark, Friday Aug 30th: An idealistic young man who joined Tvind, became a close confidant of Amdi Petersen and helped launder money through the Humanitarian Fund has now written a book revealing the truth of 18 years in the Teachers Group. Hans la Cour, now a TV producer in New Zealand, has written a 365-page account of his time with the organisation. He is a leading witness against Amdi and the other TG-members in the upcoming Danish fraud case.

La Cour was in a central position in the Fund, a project-leader in some of the most important, extravagant projects, amongst them Global Research (2.4 million Danish kroner) and The Voice of The Third World (14 million Danish kroner). He left the TG 12 years ago because, he says, he found out that the whole idea not was to help the suppressed masses of the world – but to help Amdi and the TG. He stayed silent for 10 years but 2 years ago he told Danish TV2 what he knew. In the book he – for the first time – tells the whole story about his life in the TG and his many meetings with Amdi. (Danish media)

More details will follow if anyone can send them in English to Tvind Alert.

DANISH COOP SUPERMARKETS BAN UFF/HUMANA CONTAINERS

Denmark, Aug 23rd: Coop Denmark, the country’s largest retailer, the cooperative movement that runs 800 supermarkets all over Denmark, has decided to ban UFF/Humana used-clothes containers from its supermarkets. UFF/Humana have around 150 containers placed on the supermarket car parks. The reason is the lack of openness in UFF/Humana which is against Coop Denmark’s business ethics – according to head of information in Coop Denmark, Jens Juul Nielsen. The Danish Red Cross will be allowed to place their containers instead.

Source: Kristeligt Dagblad newspaper, August 23.

Coop Sweden has already ordered UFF/Humana in Sweden to remove 100 containers. So has the supermarket chain Q8, and 200 City Councils in Sweden. In Denmark’s second largest city, Aarhus, the City Council has ordered UFF/Humana to remove their 60 containers from the city (Source: Aarhus Stiftstidende Sept 3rd.) The chairman of the environmental commission of the Association of City Councils, Kurt Hockerup, has asked all the City Councils to do as in Aarhus. (Source: Danish Media contacts)

From the Danish and international Press:

TVIND DEFENDS AMDI PETERSEN AGAINST CHARGES

Denmark, Friday Sept 6th, Berlingske Tidende (Danish newspaper): A new book, by members of the Teachers Group, seeks to defend Amdi Petersen and the Humanitarian Foundation against fraud charges. The 300-page book, formally by nine leading TG members, praises the foundation and its “29 projects in the service of mankind and nature”. A Danish journalist tells Tvind Alert: ‘There is nothing new in the book – nearly everything was published on one of the several Tvind web-pages, www.fonden.org, more than a year ago. Actually the book is only a reprint of – parts of – the web-page.’

http://www.berlingske.dk/artikel:aid=210840/

Aug. 30, Kristeligt Dagblad: UFF (Humana Denmark) are still keeping their incomes and expenditures a secret.

Aug. 22. Kristeligt Dagblad: Tvind is not complying with regulations when collecting money on the streets of Denmark for the TCE (Fighting AIDS).

CHRISTMAS ON THE BARRIER REEF FOR AMDI PETERSEN?

The Butterfly McQueen, the Teachers Group’s 40-metre superyacht, has been spotted moored at Gold Coast, Australia’s surfing playground in Queensland, as reported by the Gold Coast Bulletin (below). With great surfing and terrific beaches, and the Great Barrier Reef not far away, it’s the ideal spot for a winter break for a reclusive millionaire. The newspaper was unable to establish if the vessel has new owners yet; if it is still in Teachers Group possession, could it be Christmas in the sun for Amdi Petersen?

————————————————

(From the Gold Coast Bulletin, 27.11.04)

MOGENS Amdi Petersen is a hard man to track down.

After all, he once went missing for 22 years.

When he seemed to slip off the face of the Earth in 1979, most people saw Petersen as a throwback to the 1960s – a charismatic do-gooder out to help the Third World.

The Danish teacher espoused Marxist-Leninist principles, set up radical teaching colleges in his homeland and sent young disciples to Africa.

Then, one day, he disappeared.

Despite this, the `charitable’ causes he founded didn’t miss a beat. In fact, they grew stronger – much stronger.

Some people started calling the elusive boss a cult leader.

Others wondered whether the millions of dollars were reaching the right places.

All wanted to know where they could find Mogens.

There were stories: he was being hidden in Zimbabwe by an old friend, Robert Mugabe; he was living next door to Oprah Winfrey on an ultra-exclusive Miami island; the police were hot on his heels.

The first two may be rumours. The third is a fact.

The FBI, acting on the advice of Danish authorities, arrested Petersen at Los Angeles airport in February, 2002, as he changed planes.
He had been en route from Africa to a Mexican resort, and there had been some changes in two decades. It was as if the former penniless hippie had emerged from a chrysalis of capitalism.

According to assistant US attorney Matthew E. Sloan, Mogens Amdi Petersen was the head of a secretive business empire called Tvind, which controlled worldwide assets of more than $126 million.

There were schools for troubled youths in Denmark; op shops and volunteer recruiting centres in Europe and the US; plantations in Belize, Brazil, and Malaysia; property and shipping companies in the Caribbean and Florida; a satellite TV station; a ranch in Zimbabwe.

Petersen had access to luxury homes dotted around the world, had a multimillion-dollar Florida apartment just for his dogs and enjoyed the use of an elegant super-yacht. At 40m, it was once the biggest fibreglass luxury vessel in the world.

If you take a stroll to the Broadwater this weekend you can see it for yourself in all its three-masted, teak-inlaid glory.

Named Butterfly McQueen, the Bermuda rigged schooner was until recently owned by Tvind offshoot the Teachers Group.
It still might be – the crew won’t say much, other than their last port of call was Auckland.

The skipper, Joe Grove, is in his 50s with a mop of sandy-coloured hair. He speaks with a European accent and has a small, young crew. He looks relaxed in a white T-shirt and it’s fairly obvious that the boss, whoever that may be, hasn’t made the trip to the Coast.
Asked yesterday whether his fine-looking yacht – up close it looks more like a ship – is still connected with Tvind and Petersen, he said: “I’m just here to run the boat.

“I can give you technical details, but that’s it. That’s fairly standard practice in this business.”

He’s right. Several million dollars doesn’t just buy you a nice boat, it buys a measure of privacy. The superyacht crowd don’t court publicity, and skippers with loose lips tend to find it hard to get work.

Teachers Group had been trying to sell Butterfly McQueen for several years and it remains listed for sale on the Internet at $4.1 million.
The superyacht, named after Scarlett O’Hara’s maid in Gone with the Wind, glided into the Seaway on November 30.

About the same time in Denmark, Petersen was attending one of his court hearings.

He and seven top aides are facing charges of embezzling $11.3 million from a charity and evading $13.8 million in taxes.

Petersen denies all the charges. He said he was retired and that the trappings of a high-flying lifestyle, including the yacht, were simply put at his disposal by others who bought them as investments.

The case is big news in Denmark, where Petersen has been a household name for many years.

He wasn’t keen on going home, though, fighting hard to avoid extradition from the US.

Petersen needed a public defender for the task, he said, because he was part of a `communal group’.

The man who had once signed for a $126,000 membership at Miami’s Fisher Island Golf Club had just $2500 to his name.

But in the end the public defender wasn’t needed.

Somehow Petersen found the money to appoint high-profile O.J. Simpson attorney Robert Shapiro who described his man as a `humanitarian’. Jail him and Tvind’s good work may grind to a halt.

“Millions of people around the world who are on the poverty level, who are depending on this for education, will indeed be cut off,” Mr Shapiro told a hearing at a Los Angeles court.

But he couldn’t pull off another O.J., and Petersen was sent home late in 2002.

His case is not expected to finish until sometime next year, and Petersen has been free to travel overseas between court dates, visiting the UK and Zimbabwe, where he has a headquarters designed by Joern Utzon, the man who penned the Sydney Opera House.

Perhaps in the midst of a cold snowy Scandinavian winter he dreams of sunny days spent somewhere like the Broadwater, ensconced in polished cherry wood, rested in handcrafted Italian furniture and bathed in water from gold-plated taps.

The Butterfly McQueen has all that and more.

Frede Farmand, who wrote a book about Petersen called The Master from Tvind, said his subject’s ultimate aim was to take the yacht and a hand-picked group of favourites to Fiji where they would set up an idyllic base.

Judging by the way the case has dragged on, that won’t be happening any time soon, and maybe not at all.

Horror stories continue to emerge in northern hemisphere media about young and idealistic university students being lured to questionable Tvind humanitarian aid projects in both Central and South America.

Many say they were injured or abused, picked up tropical diseases or were stranded in remote outposts and left to find their own way back home.

Despite this, some find the challenge life-changing in a positive way and are indoctrinated to become part of Tvind, handing control of their wages and lives to the collective.

Briton Alex Casteel worked with children in Guatemala and told Miami New Times reporter Rebecca Wakefield about his experience.
“People like me agree to join the Teachers Group because we believe in doing humanitarian work,” he said.

“We agree that our salary should go into a pooled account believing this money would be used to fund new projects.

“Then the reality appears.”

A former high-ranking member of the Teachers Group, Hans la Cour, walked off another Tvind yacht when it docked in New Zealand in 1990.

He said he had fallen in love with an American crew member and Petersen had forced them to split up.

The group’s original ambition had been `world revolution’, he told the Chicago Tribune.

But when Petersen went underground, `the nature of the beast started showing’.

“As Amdi became more isolated from the real world he wanted to create this feeling of us against everybody else,” said Mr la Cour.
Petersen allegedly told some members to collect family photos and old letters so they could not be traced if they also had to disappear, and sterilisation was encouraged among some women members.

The Maoist principle of `constructive self-criticism’ – basically a group put-down lasting hours – was applied to those who baulked at Tvind directives.

“Anybody who dared stand up would get worked on,” said Mr la Cour, who has also written a book about his 18 years with Tvind.
In it, he describes running non-existent `environmental projects’ and then laundering the proceeds.

He says he cruised the South Atlantic doing `surveys’ in a ship called the Marco Polo while the money set aside for the work was used to buy a $11.3 million fruit plantation in Brazil.

Danish prosecutor Poul Gade seemed to sum it up when he was interviewed by the Tribune about Tvind earlier this year.

“It seems to me that they started out with an aim to create some very good things,” he said.

“But perhaps it got out of hand.

“Power corrupts, and it is more fun to be the CEO of a multi-million-dollar company and live in Miami than to do hard labour to help the poor.”

If Petersen has a nemesis it must be UK journalist Michael Durham.

He first heard about Petersen almost 10 years ago and has penned articles about him for London’s Sunday Times and The Guardian.
When contacted by The Bulletin this week, Mr Durham had just returned from a trip to Denmark where he saw Petersen face to face – no mean feat considering the Dane’s secretive nature.

He had also tracked down a former intimate of Petersen who spent time with him in Australia during a world trip in the late 1960s.
Mr Durham knows of the Butterfly McQueen and was interested to hear of its latest voyage.

The yacht is featured on a comprehensive website he has set up about Tvind called Tvindalert.

“There has been a sense of a game between us, the journalists and (Tvind),” said Mr Durham.

“It’s sort of a little hunt.”

In Norway, the hunt is coming to an end for Petersen.

On the other side of the world, floating gently at Southport Yacht Club, is the Butterfly McQueen.

Perhaps it has new owners.

If so, the history of their expensive toy will provide them with plenty of fodder for dockside cocktail parties in Porto Cervo, St Kitts . . . and perhaps Main Beach.

Amdi Petersen appeared in court in Denmark today (Sunday) after arriving at Copenhagen airport at noon on Saturday.   Hiding his face police rushed him from the airport to the court jail in Ringkoebing.   At the court hearing today Petersen pleaded not guilty.   He appears to be in good shape.  The court’s decision – whether Amdi P. should stay in custody – will be published Monday morning.   (Visit Tvind Alert to find out the decision.)  (Source: Danish media)

REPORT LINKS AMDI TO SECOND HAND CLOTHES SCAM

In its detailed article on Tvind’s used clothes trading in Holland and Jersey (August 24th) Berlingske Tidende, the Danish newspaper, linked Amdi Petersen directly with an offshore company said to have received millions of Euros that ‘disappeared’ from Tvind used clothes charities.   A summary of some of the main points of this article is now posted on Tvind Alert at: (http://www.tvindalert.org.uk/newspapers/2002/berlingske24aug.htm)

In the article journalist Michael Bjerre says Tvind has deceived the European public for years, by making them believe their second hand clothes would be used to help the poor in the Third World.     Instead Tvind directed the millions earned by selling the clothes given by the public directly to secret companies on the tax haven Jersey.   The firm Textile Transformation EC Trading in Amsterdam, which went bankrupt in 2000, played a major role in the money game. In the end the millions disappeared into the mother company of the Jersey-firms, Coriander Holdings Ltd, which a source says, is controlled by Tvind-leader Amdi Petersen.

Holland plays a major role in Tvind’s clothes recycling gig.     In this game Teachers Group member Flemming Gustaffson plays a significant role.   Gustaffson, who is charged with money laundering in Belgium, is now a key person in a recently started Tvind company, ConMore, which keeps a shabby office in the city of Maarssen, south-east of Amsterdam. ConMore is the European agent of Tvind’s worldwide clothes recycling company Garson and Shaw, with offices in Britain and the United States.  At first there was a strong denial of the Jersey-firms being connected to the Tvind-group, but at a later stage the directors of some of the Jersey-firms confessed that they were a part of the Tvind-group.

From the Danish press:

Sept 10th: Amdi Petersen has asked for a second lawyer. Two lawyers have been appointed by Poul Joergensen, and Amdi Petersen wants the same for himself which should, like his current lawyer Anders Boelskifte, be paid for by the Danish government. The judge for now has dismissed the request. (Ekstra Bladet, Jyllands-Posten)

ANGOLA
BP STOPS FUNDING ADPP, BUT BIG AMERICAN ORG IS STILL INVOLVED
ADPP in Angola has received large sums from multinational oil companies in payments linked to oil prospecting concessions.  A Tvind Alert contact writes:  “As far as I know BP have withdrawn all funding, Shell never started, the biggest donor to ADPP is now Sonangol, the Angola state oil company.      The only other route for real embarrassment is the oil company funded aids-prevention programme in Luanda (USAID put in $7m, the bigger oilies all put in $0.5m each), the programme is run by PSI International, a very respectable outfit based in Washington DC.  They are well aware of the reputation of ADPP, but a year ago ADPP were still significant part of their community based condom sales programme.

Update 18th February 2009

Posted by investigator On August - 5 - 2010

Media interest – can you help?

Following the fraud conviction of Poul Joergensen, we have been contacted by numerous media outlets and they need your help. Unfortunately there will be no payment for interviews, but hey, just consider – we journalists and inquiring souls at Tvind Alert have been working on this without any payment for years – it’s not all about money! If you are happy to do an interview with a journalist, tell us and we’ll pass it on.

  • Are you a former DI from anywhere in the world who recently went to a Tvind school in Denmark – where you spent most of your time ‘fudraising’ and hardly any time learning? A major Danish broadcaster has contacted us and would like to interview you.
  • Are you in Malawi or Mozambique or know anything at all about the Planet Aid – USDA Food for Progress scheme? We have been visited in London by reporters from a leading newspaper in Scandinavia who are investigating and would like a confidential interview.
  • A US TV channel in Washington has called us. They are collecting information for an item to be broadcast in the USA and need help. They would like to hear from you if you are an American who has recently been to a Tvind college (anywhere in the world, but especially in the USA) or gone abroad with Tvind.
  • The BBC ‘Face the Facts’ programme is working on a follow-up to its 2008 broadcast on Winestead Hall and would like to hear from anyone who knows anything about the Teachers Group’s enterprises in Britain, especially the registered charity DAPP UK, or from any British ex-DIs who have gone abroad.

MORE NEWS

Germany: Humana is ‘not serious’

The German Federal Department for Economical Cooperation and Development has just issued a statement declaring “Humana People to People Deutschland e.V.” not to be a serious organisation for development politics. This announcement was welcomed by a group of 70 NGOs for development politics. Watch this space.

Are there any volunteers to help to build an up to date ‘Germany’ page here?

New page on offshore companies

I have created a page on Teachers Group offshore companies and hope to add to as time allows, with a dossier available as evidence to third parties. So if there is anyone out there with any knowledge of these companies, please tell me. I am briefing several experts on money laundering and tax evasion with a view to trying to place an article in the UK media soon.

Investigating Planet Aid – USDA Food for Progress

One of our number in the United States is looking closely at this scheme and we are hoping to make the US authorities aware of the clear link between Planet Aid and the now proven fraud allegations in Europe – if they will listen. Can you help?

Do something for Tvind Alert

Recently quite a few people have come forward to offer to help do something for Tvind Alert and we’ll be getting back to them shortly with ideas. We wanted to make www.tvindalert.com more collaborative but it turns out our host does not support a Content Management System so it’s back to the drawing board.

If you are a budding sleuth and want to build a page on www.tvindalert.com using Internet and email to investigate, then tell us…..we could also do with people to create things on YouTube and generally help with kind of e-admin and stuff.

Onward and upward.
