An investigative website into the Humana People-to-People organisation and the international Tvind movement ... in China
Tvind assets: Trayton Group (furniture trading, timber, computer electronics companies), Bo Concept stores, furniture factory, Yunnan Institute for Development, IEC (International Education Co-ordination) (local recruitment)
Tvind has a huge and secret business empire in China. The Danish newspaper Berlingske Tidende recently exposed a network of Tvind commercial enterprises in Shanghai, under the name the Trayton Group. This conglomerate runs a 700 square metre furniture factory that exports to IKEA, is the franchisee of 14 furniture showrooms under the Bo Concept name (a company with branches in 20 countries), and its own timber and computer companies. It employs 320 local workers.
Tvind would have liked to keep its connection with this profitable enterprise secret - it is owned by an offshore company in the Isle of Man, Trayton Holdings, whose director is one of Tvind's key financial book-keepers, Christie Pipps. Its Danish manager in Shanghai, Simon Lichtenberg, at first tried to deny its connection with Tvind.
Meanwhile. Tvind's Yunnan Institute for Development opened in 2000 - although Tvind Alert recently heard all the students had 'run away'. Tvind continues to recruit idealistic but naive young people as solidarity workers in China and Hong Kong through its far-east network, International Education Co-ordination.
Investigative news article in Berlingske Tidende, March 2000
Noel's story The full story of YID Yunnan. Yunnan, China, 2002 At the moment there is NO Humana project in China ..... but if you attend a Humana info weekend in Europe you will be told that you can go to China and work on Child aid project. This is what I was told, at a time when there was no project. If this is how Humana money is spent in China how is it spent elsewhere and by whom? It makes you understand why they are so secretive and that they obviously have much more to hide.
A correspondent writes (Nov 2001): "The "students" who left the school earlier this year were in reality "teachers in training" and they ran away after discovering what Tvind / HPP is all about. After we left 3 more would be "teachers", all Chinese, left for good. The start of the school was delayed because of the holiday period here in China, but only 2 "students" came. One from Holland left the school even before it started and is now trying to recover the 250 US dollars he had paid to enroll, the other one from Taiwan has not paid anything and has apparently decided to work as a volunteer in the projects established by YID in Wuding County. Now we heard that a student from Malaysia has come, and that he is trying to recover the full tuition fee,3500 US dollars. We will get back to you soon for more."

'I feel I have been cheated. Nobody said you had to fundraise.'
My name is XXXX XXX, coming from China, enrolled in [a Tvind Travelling Folk High School in Denmark] in October as the solidarity worker.....
I arrived at the school in October.....Before I came to Denmark, I have paid US dollar 4,000 to the school and signed an agreement, agreed to pay for the months I have stayed in the school and for one extra month if I quit in mid-programme. Now the head teacher .... keeps the copy of my agreement.
As what the school explained, the amount US dollar 4,000 I paid consists of school fees which is 2,500 DKK (Danish kronen) per month, totally 8 months, and half travel expense to Africa which is 5,500 DKK, and enrollment fee which is 1700 DKK. Total amount is 27,200 DKK which equals approximately US dollars 4,000.
All these above amount have been written in the agreement I signed. A few weeks after my arrival at the school, the head teacher requested me and another Chinese student to sign a new agreement. According to the new agreement, I should pay 7,000 DKK as the cancellation fee if I quit in mid-programme, while according to the old agreement I signed in China, I only need to pay 2,500 DKK if I quit.
The head teacher explained that the new agreement was decided by all the headmasters of the Travelling Folk High schools after some Chinese students quit from the school in Boenze and got their school fee back. She also explained that the 7,000 DKK is same to all the students, including the students coming from European countries.
I didn't like this new agreement but I signed, because I didn't expect I would quit. After we spent three weeks fundraising in Denmark, I found so many people don't like Tvind. Later I read more reports and stories written by ex-member of Tvind on internet, I am not sure what I'm doing is right, I also feel I have been cheated by the school and head teacher, because before I came to school, I didn't know I should fundraise 3,500 DKK/per month for 8 months, when I was in China I was told absolutely nothing about this by the Danish lady named Lotte who works in China to enroll Chinese students.
I decided to quit, and have talked with my head teacher. The head teacher got angry and crazy, screaming and shouting at me. Finally, the head teacher agreed me to quit, she put (today) as my cancellation date, but she said could only give me the money back on the 20th of next January because doesn't have any money right now. The head teacher will keep the 7,000 DKK in their pocket, as per the new agreement I signed, because said the new agreement is legal. The head teacher doesn't want to give the money to me in cash, but wants to send them to China by transfer.
If I stay in the school to wait for the money until next month, I should pay for everything for my stay in January. So I would like to have any advice or help from you, because I don't know if the new agreement I signed is legal. What should I do to get the money back? How can I protect myself in this situation?
"Wrong, absolutely wrong"
Hi,
I have just quitted from a Tvind school in Denmark. The article in your web page written by Kamila tells everything in my school.
I will never feel sad from my Tvind experience because I met so many nice boys and girls for whom I fought against Tvind.
I am a Chinese and I feel that there is a huge culture difference between east and west which makes me difficult to tell what is wrong and what is right. But as for Tvind, I can tell anybody that it is wrong, absolutely wrong. Fighting against Tvind will become my life time duty. Because they cheat innocent young people to earn money for Tvind, not for the poor. You can put my emails in the guest book.
Thank all who give time and energy to this website.
