IICD Michigan

Institute for International Cooperation and Development, Dowagaic, MI.    Opened August 1999.

Tvind DRH college for 'development instructors' in USA.    Students attend for around six months but spend much of the time begging and 'fundraising'.   Reportedly poor standards of teaching and accommodation.   The property is thought to be leased from AS Properties, a Tvind company.

Local people are objecting to proposals to provide a residential treatment centre for disturbed adolescents.

Latest news

NEIGHBOURS BLOCK PLANS FOR RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT FACILITY

2003: A Tvind plan to open a residential unit for disturbed adolescents at IICD Michigan has been blocked by nearby residents.  The plan has been turned down by the State Licensing Office.

Tvind Alert readers also alerted state authorities and the Michigan Attorney General  to Tvind's poor record and its controversial history of running treatment centres.   Similar centres in the USA, the UK and Denmark have previously been closed down by authorities.   Tvind makes large sums by offering residential treatment to teenagers, but money intended to finance children's care may have been switched to foreign bank accounts instead.

COSTLY NEW JAN UTZON-DESIGNED BUILDING OPENS

December 2002:  The claim that Tvind is an impoverished foreign aid organisation is again challenged, this time by a brand new school building opened at IICD Michigan.  The building is designed by Danish architect Jan Utzon.

Utzon, a supporter but not thought to be a TG member, also designed Humanas extravagant new headquarters building at Shamva, Zimbabwe.   Volunteers fundraising on street corners, supposedly to finance their college courses, might find this interesting news.  Unfortunately Tvind Alert does not know how much the Utzon-designed building cost, or which Tvind company paid the bill.

EX-STUDENT SENDS PHOTOS OF DOWAGAIC 'SQUALOR'

2002:  Photographs sent by a contact who writes:    "They are pictures of a ground-floor bathroom that was used by ... an Argentinian woman who is a paraplegic.  I was so disgusted with the conditions that she was having to put up with (I can't communicate the smell!!)"

March 2002:    Rebellion at Dowagaic.

A correspondent writes:    "The story I got, from several sources, was that a number of people left IICD - Michigan last weekend, because their Guatamala trip, which they had paid upfront for, had been working toward, and had understood they were fundraising for,  was cancelled for lack of funds. At least one person who was heading to Zambia quit also, after hearing of the living conditions of the volunteers there from a volunteer currently IN Zambia, who was faxing them.  The most recent project in Guatamala was dispensed with midway -- the TG leader of the trip quit the TG in December...there were no funds for the volunteers there, either, according to the people I talked with, yet the TG staff was all able to fly to Denmark last month for a big pep rally, and enjoy the fact that the TG had purchased a brand new HOT AIR BALLOON! This, by the way was at the same time that the volunteers at IICD- MI had been left with no food to speak of...  The volunteers at IICD - MI had been  emailing the IICD - MA volunteers sharing experiences... until the TG staff returned and  the email functions on the computers were shut down.  The fax machine was also placed "off-limits," after an email describing conditions at the Zambia project was placed on the public bulletin board."     Marianna  maver@wmol.com

A former staff member writes:   "IICD in Michigan is under major distress. The students going to Guatemala recently found out that they can not go. Planet Aid has shut the project down for not making money. The students know of the financial situation at IICD. They have rebelled, and have included some of the Zambian students. This weekend is a friends and family weekend and all the students parents are going to be there. It is going to be a total mess...chaos. They are demanding their full tuitions back and the school doesn't have it. Some of the students have contacted the media. I don't know which ones. They also
contacted the students at IICD in Mass. and informed them of the problems. Now they are in an uproar too.
They have loaded up on TG members who have been at IICD trying to smooth out the situation. It's not
working. I would love to be a fly on the wall and see how they are going to get out of this mess."

What You Can Do

All those disgruntled IICD leave-takers COULD call the Better Business Bureau and register a complaint.  I checked into doing that myself a while back (but because I had not been through the program and had lost no money to them, I was not eligible to make a complaint).     All former volunteers are, though...  the BBB basically just keeps complaints on file, so that anybody with an inquiry can be informed about the reputation of an organization.   Here's their address (off the Web):

     Ellen's Story

Ellen, a 54 year old teacher from Canada, volunteered to work with HPPI (Humana People-to-People India) in 2000, attracted by the idea of six months training and working with the poor.   She quickly became disillusioned, first with the non-education at IICD Michigan, and then with the amateurism, disregard for volunteers, sniping, intrigue and bullying among project leaders in Rajasthan.

     Sara's story

Hello, my name is Sara and I was a student who left IICD-MI when I was planning to go to Zambia in July [2002].      It was one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make and I can't honestly tell you right now that I am fully happy to be back home away from IICD-MI.......I want potential volunteers to understand that you must be CRITICAL of everything that goes on, and realize even though YOU may think you're doing good.. that YOUR actions may be part of and helping something that is NOT!!!!!

Boston Magazine: Mission Control, by Jay Cheshes   October 2000

In 1970, a group of Danish hippies set out on a mission to save the world. Thirty years later, some of the young acolytes they recruited claim the group has become a cult, amassing riches in the hundreds of millions of dollars under the direction of an elusive and mysterious founder. Now, with recruiting efforts reaching into the United States, ex-members say the mission is no longer to save the world but to conquer it. North American headquarters? Massachusetts
