THE END FOR HUMANA BELGIUM?

September 2004 - According to reliable information, the not-for profit organisation (asbl/vzw) Humana Belgium is now at the point of liquidation and dissolution by Belgian justice.

The organisation never paid arrears at the National Institute for Social Security (ONSS/RSZ) for an amount of more than 170.000 euro. It also pulled out of warehouses near Ghent, without paying more than 6 months of rent and leaving tons of textile waste behind (cleaning up cost another 25.000 euro).

Earlier this year, the Humana-network of clothes collection boxes in the country was taken over by a small unknown non-for-profit organisation, "De Schakel" (= "The Link").     It is unclear if the benefit (for Humana) of this transfer could be claimed by the creditors.

These events should also be seen in a context of a dramatically declining market of second hand textile, in Belgium and in other Western European countries. Prices are at the lowest for decades and the creation of added value (by sorting and recycling) is moving massively to Eastern European, Russian and Asian countries. The Tvind-group has been reorganising its business for years at a macro-level, anticipating this downward trend. In this strategy, Humana Belgium was not profitable enough anymore.

BELGIAN MONEY LAUNDERING CASE

February 2004:    The Belgian court case against eight members of the Teachers Group on 5m euro money laundering has been dropped.  To the disappointment of investigators, Belgian judges ruled there was no case to answer.

HUMANA SHOP SUDDENLY CLOSES

15th January 2004:    The shop at Madousquare in Brussels, where Humana was selling second hand textile (and for a while also new clothes from Morocco) during more than 10 years, was suddenly found closed and empty since beginning of this year.

During the glorious years (nineties), Humana hired also offices in the building at Madousquare for its Belgian headquarters, actually established somewhere in the region of Ghent.

HUMANA BELGIUM GOING BANKRUPT?

3rd April 2003:  According to an official document, Humana Belgium vzw/asbl, now has net arrears of almost €180.000 at the National Office of Social Security (RSZ/ONSS), and a total debt to RSZ/ONSS, accumulated since 1999, of more than €1 million.

Also according to confidential (official) information, no arrears have been paid since January of this year, putting at risk the credit plan that Humana  arranged with the RSZ/ONSS.  The anticipated scenario of judicial liquidation of Humana Belgium vzw/asbl, leaving important debts, seems very close now.

BELGIAN MONEY LAUNDERING CASE IS POSTPONED AGAIN

6th March 2003:  The separate Belgian court case against eight members of the Teachers Group on 5m euro money laundering is due to be postponed again, reports Dutch newspaper Trouw.

The case should have started in November last year.  It was put back to May 25th, but will be postponed again because the police investigation is not finished yet.

One of the TG members charged is Flemming Gustaffson, who is connected to ConMore BV in Holland, an important Tvind clothes trading company that buys clothes from the Humana organisations in Europe for export.

Mr Gustaffson previously ran EC Trading, another Tvind used clothes trading company, which went bankrupt in 2000 owing £1.4m

"Hello, We have a few HUMANA collection boxes for old clothes in our municipality of Fourons (Voeren) in Belgium. HUMANA seems to be more active in the North (Flemish-speaking) part of the country. Are the national sections of HUMANA aware of the corruption within their international organisation or are they just innocent victims unaware of where all the money is going? Regards,"
